What is an E-Cig?
A guide to help get you oriented.

What is an Electronic Cigarette

An electronic cigarette, also known as an e-cig, nicotine vaporizer, vapor pen, or hookah pen, is a hand-held vaporizer device made for the delivery of nicotine without the use of tobacco. An electronic cigarette produces a thick vapor, much like steam, that is enriched with nicotine to satisfy your craving for a cigarette on all levels, without actually smoking a cigarette. Electronic cigarettes are not designed as a means to quit nicotine but rather to provide a safer alternative than traditional tobacco, as you are not inhaling the tar and other carcinogens found in traditional analog cigarettes. Electronic cigarettes come in a wide variety of styles and types. In this guide we'll cover a few of the basic products as well as give you an in depth look at alternatives and options.

Is there any evidence that E-Cigs pose less of a risk than tobacco

Yes, there is overwhelming amounts of scientific studies, surveys and research on this subject. CASAA maintains a list of all such studies which can be found here.

What does eGo mean

eGo is an industry standard created so manufacturers could create compatible products with little to no collaboration. It allows for rapid innovation, and a large variety of interchangeable styles of tanks, and batteries. There are other standards as well, such as an 808 connection, which is typically used for smaller e-cigs with a more cigarette-like profile. 510 is used for larger MODS, most of which are compatible with eGo standards as well. ECIG Charleston deals mostly in eGo products to keep the bulk of our line cross compatible, however, we do carry a few products with other standards, and most of our batteries are eGo threaded (outer threading) as well as 510 threaded (inner threading) for an even wider range of tank and cartomizer compatibility.

What does a typical E-Cig consist of

There are many types of Electronic Cigarette set-ups. The Standard Set up consists of: a battery, a rebuildable tank, a drip-tip, a coil, and an e-liquid. A charger would also be needed to charge your battery. Typically one coil and one drip tip are included with your tank. Coils need to be replaced every so often, every 5 to 10 days on average, and many people prefer to replace the standard drip tip with a more stylish one, to create their own unique and individualized setup. There are also other types of set-ups such as cartomizers instead of tanks, or disposable rather then rebuildable tanks (eliminating the need to replace coils). Most of our customers seem to prefer rebuildable tanks due to their e-liquid capacity versus cartomizers, and their lower cost over time versus disposable tanks.

What type of battery is right for me

We carry Mystart eGo batteries. They are available in two sizes: 650mAh and 1300mAh. The size of the battery determines how long it will last, the physical dimensions of the battery, and how long it takes to charge. A larger battery takes longer to charge but also lasts longer, and visa versa. The mAh of a battery does not affect vapor production.Other eGo battery options include the MyStart Revolver, which is an eGo battery taken to the next level, with adjustable voltage between 3.3v and 4.8v. They are available in 900mAh and 1300mAh. Adjustable voltage allows you to fine tune your battery to give you the perfect hit, not too light, not too strong. A lower voltage will produce a lighter, cooler vapor, and a higher voltage will produce a thicker, warmer vapor. Mystart Revolvers are the preferred battery of most ECIG Charleston customers. Other batteries we carry are MyStart EVOD 900mAh batteries which fit eGo tanks but do not necessarily conform to eGo standards, however they offer a sleeker profile with a flush button design. Last but not least, we offer APV(Advanced Personal Vaporizer) set-ups which are also known as MODs. Typically only veteran vapers use these because they can be a bit complicated for the first time vaper and generally run in a much higher price range. They offer computer controlled operability, extremely long battery life, and replaceable internal li-ion batteries.

What type of tank is right for me

Choosing a tank is the biggest hurdle you may face as a first time vaper, as there are many different styles to choose from. Our best selling tanks, currently, are the MyStart Aspire Bottom Dual Coil tanks, which come in a few different styles and sizes and all follow the eGo standard. Generally, these Aspire styles only differ in aesthetics and e-liquid capacity, and all of them use the same replacement coils. We do generally recommend starting with a Mystart eGo Tank clearomizer, which is a consistently reliable disposable tank. Starting with a disposable tank allows you to try an E-Cig without committing to any tank style, and eliminates having to worry about learning how to, and when to replace coils. Starting with a basic, disposable tank also allows you to more easily determine what you would like out of your next tank. For example: Would you like an easier pull with more air flow? Maybe a tighter pull with thicker vapor? Disposable tanks generally last about a week, sometimes more, sometimes less, depending on your smoking habits. Other popular styles are top coils, such as the MyStart M3, with single or dual top coils available, and single bottom coils, such as the Kanger T3S. Another thing to keep in mind when choosing your tank is resistance(oHms), higher oHms allow you to fire your E-Cig at a hotter temperature to produce a thicker vapor without having a variable volt battery. If you are looking for more vapor production, whether you're using a basic battery, or or revolver battery, dual coil tanks may be a good option for you. Dual coils run two coils which simultaneously vaporize e-liquid, creating a thicker, richer vapor cloud. These dual coil wicks can also be run at higher voltages on revolver batteries, allowing for warmer vapor.

What is e-liquid? How do I choose the right one for me

E-Liquid is the nicotine enriched 'juice' you fill your electronic cigarette with. While we cannot speak for every company out there, we can tell you our e-liquids consist of very few ingredients which include distilled water, propelyne glycol, vegetable glycerin, all natural flavorings, and nicotine (optional). All of these ingredients, with the exception of nicotine, can be commonly found in all types of foods. We sell e-liquid in two different sizes, 10mL and 30mL (milliliters), and four different nicotine levels:

24mg (2.4% nicotine by volume) - One and a half to two pack a day smoker.
18mg (1.8% nicotine by volume) - One pack to a pack and a half a day smoker.
11mg(1.1% nicotine by volume) - Half a pack to 3/4 of a pack a day smoker.
6mg(0.6% nicotine by volume) - Casual or social smoker.

We also offer a level which contains no nicotine at all (0mg) if you just want to see what all the hype is about.

What do you recommend for the first time vaper

We understand that getting started can be a little confusing, especially with the large variety of products we offer. However, with a little commitment, e-cigs can truly change your life and allow you to finally kick those analogs to the curb. If you're still not sure where to start, then we recommend the MyStart Express Starter Kit. It includes one MyStart 650mAh Battery, one MyStart eGo tank, one 10ml E-Liquid (choose 18mg Tobacco or 18mg Menthol), and one MyStart USB Charger (You will need a computer to charge your battery with this. It can be very dangerous to use phone/ipod/ipad chargers. If you would like to charge your battery in a wall outlet, you will also need a MyStart Wall Adapter.) This simple and inexpensive kit will allow you to try an e-cig without breaking the bank, or getting in over your head. Once you start using your kit, your preferences will develop and you can begin customizing and accessorizing your e-cig to suit your needs. If you already have an idea where to start you can build a kit with our Design Your Way Kit, or opt for a Mystart Revolver Kit, a MyStart Aspire Kit, or a MyStart EVOD Kit We wish you the best in your journey to get off of tobacco once and for all! If you have questions, or need help or guidance, we can be reached at our help desk, or the support number listed at the top of our website.

What is the difference between top coils and bottom coils

Top coil tanks have paved the way for the electronic cigarette industry. They have been the solid reliable standard for a while. With a proven track record, you can't go wrong with a top coil tank. Bottom Coils are the latest and greatest technology coming out of our industry. Bottom coil tanks hold most of the advantages due to an improved design. When replacing coils in top coil tanks, you typically have to dump your remaining e-liquid. This is not the case with bottom coil tanks. Bottom coil tanks also allow you to run your tank much lower on liquid before needing to be refilled due the wick and coil placement at the bottom of the tank. This also means you can take more drags in a shorter amount of time because the e-liquid doesn't have to travel up the wick, it absorbs faster and you rarely get a dry, burnt hit. Top coil tanks sport the advantage of being able to see the wicks, so you know when to replace your coils before you taste it. They are also preferred for thinner e-liquids because bottom coils have a tendency to flood when left sitting with a thin liquid.

Is there anything else I should know about coils

Coils are typically only compatible with the tanks they were made for. There are a few exceptions such as the Mystart Magic tanks, which use the same coils as the Mystart M3 tank. On our website, the coils will list what tanks they work for in the product image. If it's not listed, it simply is not compatible. Coils come in different resistance levels (oHms). A higher oHm coil will fire at a higher temperature, and produce a tighter pull and thicker vapor. Whereas a lower resistance will produce an airier hit with an easier pull, but will conserve battery life. You probably don't want to jump right into a high resistance coil, as the thicker vapor is sometimes too intense for some people. It all depends on your personal preferences. There are also dual coils to consider. Dual coil tanks have two independent wicks inside of one assembly. The purpose is to produce a thicker vapor, although there is an effect on the life of the battery, it's just not as much as moving up in oHms. When moving up to 2.8oHm - 4.0oHm coils you will also need a higher voltage than the standard eGo batteries provide. This is where the MyStart Revolver and APV batteries come into play. They allow you to adjust your voltage to match your coils. Coils vary in life span from tank to tank and from person to person, but the average life expectancy of a coil for a "pack a day" smoker is generally one week. The lifespan of a coil is due to residue build up on the wick and coil itself which, after a while, you will begin to taste. The flavor will taste less clean, and more burnt. This is when it is time to replace your coil. Other coil replacement indicators would include e-liquid leakage, lack of vapor production, or a difficult hit (like pulling through a clogged straw). We sell coils in packs of three, which generally provide three weeks to a month worth of vaping for the average person.

What, exactly, is a drip tip

Drip tips are the mouth piece on an e-cig. They help to prevent E-Liquid from dripping out of the top of your e-cig. Many styles are available to choose from, which add to the overall look of your e-cig. There are two drip tip standards that we carry, which fit the tanks we carry with changeable drip tips. The CE4 standard is a threaded drip tip that screws into the top of your e-cig. The 510/808 standard pops in and is secured and sealed by a rubber grommet. Make sure you buy the right drip tip for your e-cig, or it wont fit.
